Exploring the Internet – Sections 2 and 3

The second part of the internet browser test began with User Interface, because after all it is important to have a good interface when choosing a different browser. I took into consideration the results from the Acid3 Test, ease of use, and the number of unique built-in features. (This did not include Widgets, gadgets and such.) The results for the User Interface section are the following:

1. Opera 10 beta2
1. Google Chrome 3.0.192.2
3. Apple Safari 4.0.2
4. Maxthon 2.5.3
4. Mozilla Firefox 3.5.1

As you will see, there are two ties, which is going to be accepted for sections, but not for the final result. With these rankings for Section 2, 20 points were given to both Opera and Chrome, 5 points were awarded to Safari, and 3 points were awarded to both Maxthon and Firefox. The running Total Score/Placement is as such:

1. Opera 10 beta2 (40 pts)
2. Google Chrome 3.0.192.2 (25 pts)
3. Apple Safari 4.0.2 (15 pts)
4. Maxthon 2.5.3 (4 pts)
5. Mozilla Firefox 3.5.1 (2 pts)
6. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0 (0 pts)
7. Flock 2.5.1 (0 pts)

Maxthon and Firefox have been eliminated per the rules described in the first post, which leaves us with Opera, Chrome, and Safari. The third and last section is Security, which I have to say is an interesting topic. As I was searching for some sort of test out there, I found that many virus protection companies say that there is not a safe browser out there. But then again, they want you to buy their product, so they are going to say that. I finally found a test with results at http://nsslabs.com/anti-malware/browser-security. They used only 5 out of the 7 browsers I tested, and did not even have the latest version of several of them. Because of this, Section 3 will be weighted less. NSS reported the following:

1. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
2. Mozilla Firefox 3.07

3. Apple Safari 3
4. Google Chrome 1.0.154
5. Opera 9.64

With these rankings for Section 3, 10 points were awarded to Safari, 5 points were awarded to Chrome, and 3 points were awarded to Opera. The running Total Score/Placement is as such:

1. Opera 10 beta2 (43 pts)
2. Google Chrome 3.0.192.2 (30 pts)
3. Apple Safari 4.0.2 (25 pts)

4. Maxthon 2.5.3 (4 pts)
5. Mozilla Firefox 3.5.1 (2 pts)
6. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0 (0 pts)
7. Flock 2.5.1 (0 pts)

Chrome and Safari were eliminated per the rules described in the first post, which leaves us with Opera 10 beta2. miLogos is not going to endorse this browser however, for a couple of reasons. First of all, we are going to wait until v10 has been released as non-beta. Secondly, I have had all sorts of problems with Opera v9.64, and so I am not going to endorse that version until the new one comes out.

However, the most important reason that I am not endorsing it yet is because I want to hear from YOU. Tell me what you think of the different browsers tested, what you think of my results, etc etc.
